While we are nowhere close to the scientific breakthroughs seen in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Junior”, sensitive men who want to experience the highs and lows and the joys and pains of pregnancy, needn’t lose
heart. Even if they can’t get pregnant, they can take heart from a phenomenon that’s increasingly been seen worldwide in men these days – Pregmancy. men are not immune, either.
MEN HAVE FOOD CRAVINGS, TOO: “We are definitely seeing more of such cases now,” says clinical psychologist Dr Seema Hingorrany. “These men may actually gain weight, vomit and go through the joys that pregnancy brings. I have cases where men consciously love to be a part of this phase in their wives’ lives. Due to such an involvement, they find their world changing too. This symptom comes from the Couvade Syndrome (men having a sympathetic pregnancy). Earlier this wasn’t possible with men being in joint families. But with more nuclear families today, the Couvade Syndrome is on the rise. It’s not surprising for such men to have food cravings as well. They may get up at night and want brownies and pizzas if their wives are having them.”
WE WANTED A BABYMOON: A short getaway (popularly known as a ‘babymoon’) before the bundle of joy arrives, is also big on the agenda. Tara Sharma, who recently had a second baby, recalls how her hubby Roopak Saluja and she took time off during both pregnancies – first to Thailand and then to South Africa – to spend quality time together. “We wanted a babymoon and loved the thought of it,” she says, adding that impending motherhood need not be a worry. “I think if you’re having a healthy pregnancy, you can travel and though we made time for a little work too, the break really was a good destresser. What’s more, Roopak was a very involved husband and still is, so that made it more fun.”
